epic adventures of the irrepressible fool
Hodja Nasruddin is the great holy man, fool, trickster figure in the Middle East. A favourite figure for storytellers and Sufis alike, Nasruddin stories are not only jokes but also profound teachings. Few, however, know about his origins, how he found his beloved wife and became the hero of his people.
Over the course of the whole festival, Ashley Ramsden will share his treasure chest of Nasruddin stories with us. The performance consists of three parts – each can be visited individually, but together they form a rich tapestry of incredible adventures of the greatest fool.
Friday will set the scene for this rarely performed six hour epic featuring the adventures of the irrepressible Hodja. And they will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
Ashley Ramsden is the founder of the School of Storytelling at Emerson College (UK) — the longest running centre of its kind. For the last 40 years, he has travelled the world giving performances and workshops and is the speaker of sacred poetry.
For nearly 20 years Ashley Ramsden has brought his renowned telling of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to the Netherlands, performing Scrooge annually in The Hague. Nasruddin is his other great love.
Nasruddin would like to specially thank the unending assistance of his donkey.
