Andy is about a queer dance student in central Cape Town trying to overcome their addiction to white (heroin) when their cravings and withdrawal all become a little too real.

Andy, the drug and its manifestations will be embodied and performed by Margo van de Linde. The original text is written by Chase Rhys (1989), an award winning South African author, playwright and screenwriter. His debut book Kinnes (Kwela Books) was published in 2018, the first book ever to be written entirely in Kaaps (an Afrikaans dialect spoken by POC in Cape Town). It won the 2017 Adam and Rosalie Small Award and had sold out runs across SA. The book is now a set work at universities. He is currently shortlisted for the Kyknet Boekpryse and Andy is soon to be published as part of a collection of new writing.

Chase and Margo met while working on the Borderlands public arts project and became friends. Chase told her that one day he imagined her performing an adaptation of Andy. The rest – as they say – is history. Or more likely the future. In order to take you on this experiential rollercoaster of a story that is at once told and felt, this piece is supported by live percussion provided by Henning Luther.

Margo van de Linde (1982) is a theatre director, singer and improviser showing work nationally and internationally. Her trademark is creating performances that use a combination of written text and freestyle, supported by music. Her style is unpredictable, authentic and raw. Margo was awarded the BE Festival audience choice award for her work Translating Lola. She is also a one of the regularly supported makers at Veem House for Performance, where she developed Improvised Feminism. She just received a subsidy from All Improv towards Subculture Cabaret.
